The Ocean Project Seychelles was proud to participate in the 2018 Seychelles Ocean Festival (SOF) that took place between Friday 23rd and Sunday 26th November 2018. The event showcased the magnificent diversity, beauty and fragility of Seychelles’ marine scene via a series of different activities to commemorate the International Year of the Reef.

The Launch of SOF was held at the Eden Bleu Hotel with the screening of ‘A Plastic Ocean’ - secured by TOP through funding under the GEF Small Grants Programme. A Plastic Ocean documents the newest science, proving how plastics, once they enter the oceans, break up into small particulates that enter the food chain where they attract toxins like a magnet. These toxins are stored in seafood’s fatty tissues, and eventually consumed by us.

On Sunday 26th November, TOP and STB brought together over 65 volunteers for a beach clean on Beau Vallon beach. In the space of only 1 hour, we collected over 229 kg of rubbish. A big thank you to all the organisations that joined us on the day!

Later on in the day, TOP could be found amongst the stalls set up near the Savoy Hotel. Not only did our stall have TOP merchandise on sale but we also had a selection of stainless steel straws and reusable bottles up for grabs which products were being sold on behalf of ECOLOZIK and Little Splash with a percentage of the profits going towards TOP projects.

We also had various competitions running throughout the day including the ‘What’s Our Next Campaign’ competition that gave our supporters the opportunity to tell us which plastic problem we should target next and why. The best campaign ideas stood the chance of winning some fantastic prizes sponsored by Big Blue Divers, Mason Travel, Jouel and the Seychelles Breweries.

Last but by no means least, the TOP team in collaborations with Ben Taylor from Wise Oceans had the opportunity to host a live interactive session to discuss the problem of micro-plastics on K-Radio!
